January 2026: Kristallnacht News Update

Thank you again for signing the Kristallnacht declaration. Every month we send a few stories about Kristallnacht and the Holocaust that made the news in the previous month. Towards November 2026 we will share information about Light Up The Church 2025.

Below is the update from the stories of January 2026.

  • For Holocaust Remembrance Day, cyclist plans 1,000 km ride from Auschwitz to spell out ‘Never Again’

Czech cyclist Lukáš Klement is undertaking a 1,000-kilometer memorial ride from Auschwitz across Poland to spell out the words “Never Again” ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Organized in cooperation with ZAKA Search and Rescue, the initiative aims to honor Holocaust victims, raise awareness about rising antisemitism, and encourage public participation in remembrance and solidarity.

  • Holocaust Remembrance Day Reminds Us to Never be Bystanders

The author reflects on visiting Auschwitz with his wife, describing the experience as emotionally overwhelming and transformative. Guided through the camp’s history and confronting its human tragedies, he comes away with a deeper understanding that the Holocaust is not only about remembering the past but also about the moral responsibility to reject indifference and take action against injustice in the present.

  • Under 200,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors remain alive today, data shows

Fewer than 200,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors remain alive worldwide today, with about half living in Israel, according to the Claims Conference. The survivor population is rapidly aging, with a median age of 87, and many depend on pensions and social welfare services, highlighting the urgency of preserving their testimonies and supporting their remaining years before firsthand Holocaust memory is lost.
